How to Get Around Silverstone…Fast!

Matt Bell Podium2

by John | May 17, 2013

It’s fair to say Matt Bell knows a thing or two about winning at Silverstone.

Racing for United Autosports on his British GT Championship debut in 2010, he teamed up with his brother, Rob, to take a memorable G4 class win there. Then, two years later, he partnered Charles Bateman to another victory at the famous old circuit—this time racing a McLaren MP4-12C GT3 (a car he also campaigned at Silverstone in the 2012 Blancpain Endurance Series).

This year he’ll be taking all that valuable experience into an R8 LMS ultra, and hoping to pull off yet another victory for the team with which his name is already becoming synonymous.

Before he started his preparations for his outing in the Audi, though, we sat down with the 23-year-old to find out how he can help Simraceway players excel in this weekend’s unique Hot Lap Event at our virtual Silverstone circuit in the McLaren he knows so well. Read on for Matt’s in-depth guide to racing an MP4-12C GT3 at Silverstone.

Beware Daytona–It Doesn’t Play Nice

Daytona3_StoryTeller

by Larry | February 28, 2013

As you are reading this, the latest NASCAR Daytona 500 has been recorded into the annals of motorsport history—another chapter in the ongoing odyssey that attempts to describe the pageantry, the spectacle, the exploding, three-ring-circus that is the final act of Speedweeks, the month-long celebration of hot, nasty speed at Daytona International Speedway.

Some say that the Daytona 500 is the greatest show on Earth. Some say that if it were a Samurai warrior, it would look like Elton John wearing a Donald Duck costume, blaring out Rocketman while cleanly lopping off your head. All I know is that there’s nothing else quite like it.

by Andy | June 22, 2012

So here it is—the most powerful factory-built supercar n the history of…well, ever.

The 2012 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is precisely as spectacular as it sounds, and almost as spectacular as its phenomenal price tag of $2.7m—an eye-watering outlay that is largely down to its armada of dumbfounding statistics and features.

In 2008, Volkswagen of America took the bold step of launching its own single-make series for, of all things, its diesel Jetta model. For three seasons, the Jetta TDI Cup produced great racing and an inexpensive entry-level option for young drivers who were looking for a way into sedan, GT, and sports car racing. As part of the program VW put the competitors, all between the ages of 18 and 25, through a regime of physical fitness and high-level driver training carried out by the dedicated series coach, Jan Heylen.

Simon Says—A Lap Around Mid-Ohio with the Track Record Holder

pagenaudchampcarroadame

January 5, 2012

“I have the all-time track record at Mid-Ohio—I think it was a 1:03:7.” It was at this point of my conversation with IndyCar, sportscar, Aussie V8 and rally driver extraordinaire, Simon Pagenaud, that I fell off my chair.

The 27-year-old Indianapolis-based Frenchman loves to go fast and in the last 12 months he has taken every available opportunity to prove it. Pagenaud has driven for the factory Peugeot squad in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, he’s been ‘super sub’ in the IndyCar Series, he’s been a factory Honda driver in the Continental Tire Series for touring cars and he’s even found time to rally a Citroen C2!

That blistering lap time at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was set in a 2007 Champ Car (above) described simply by Pagenaud as “fantastic” with a “combination of power and grip that made that track layout really fun.”

One of the many beauties of Simraceway is the ability to drive cars that you may only ever get to sample in reality through one of those supercar driving experiences. But then there are some cars that are so rare–so elusive–that even dreaming about them would be a waste of time and energy.
