Circuit of the Americas Tournament–The Final

CotA Tournament Final

by John | October 26, 2012

Four weeks to the day before Formula One’s return to the United States, Simraceway’s finest lined up on the Circuit of the Americas grid, hoping to earn the right to return to the brand new track as a VIP guest when the real-world action kicks off. Read on to find out whose dream came true.

The Qualifiers

After four hard-fought battles in the Saturday heats, the field for this three-week-long tournament had been whittled down to a dozen elite drivers, including three—acerockolla, pilotapazzo, and ExtremelyFastMan—who had also made it to the grand finale of our last big-prize event, the IndyCar at Indianapolis. And with the first of those open-wheel aces qualifying for pole by more than three-quarters-of-a-second, the other racers would surely have to be at their best to take the prize.

One driver who wouldn’t be challenging, however, was gtrxu1. Due to technical issues he was forced to pull out before the race, leaving kidroca, Norbi211, rass101, Stroggefier, jmoo1, matrox_213, elitespeedway, and michael85 to take on the three IndyCar final veterans.

Early Stages

When the lights turned green, the advantage acerockolla had gained from his superb quali performance was immediately nullified when jmoo1 collided with him going into turn one and, after a fast—and incident-free—start, Norbi211 established a healthy lead.

Now languishing down in seventh-place, acerockolla would have to call on all the track expertise he’d picked up in Round 2 of the tournament to get back into the race. But while he was plotting his resurgence, there would be no such comeback for two other drivers—elitespeedway and ExtremelyFastMan—after they were forced to retire before the end of the second lap.

With Norbi211 maintaining his early lead over Stroggefier and pilotapazzo, he could have been forgiven for feeling a degree of self-satisfaction after his excellent start. However, back down the field, acerockolla was setting about recovering from his first-lap tribulations, using turn 12 to take pilotapazzo—his old Indianapolis rival—on lap 3, and Stroggefier two laps later.

Decisive Move

The American was now filling Norbi211’s mirrors and at a quarter distance the two finally went wheel-to-wheel with acerockolla trying to force his Hungarian rival into a mistake. Behind the battle for the lead, meanwhile, more excitement was unfolding as one-time second-placed Stroggefier fell further down the field, losing two places after being taken in quick succession by jmoo1 and kidroca—the latter using his momentum to seize third place on lap 11.

Two laps later, acerockolla made what would prove to be a decisive move, pouncing on the slightest of errors from the under-pressure Norbi211 and snatching back the lead he had surrendered on the grid. The 13th lap also proved unlucky for kidroca as the Bulgarian racer caught the curb and was passed by jmoo1 and a resurgent Stroggefier.

The Finale

Over the next six laps, as acerockolla put distance between himself and Norbi211, kidroca recovered his composure sufficiently to take back third position. However even his late charge wasn’t enough to reel in the pair in front of him, with acerockolla deservedly taking the checkered flag—and that awesome prize—almost eight seconds clear of Norbi211. Behind third-placed kidroca came jmoo1, Stroggefier, pilotapazzo, rass101, and michael85, with matrox_213, elitespeedway, and ExtremelyFastMan failing to finish.

So after another captivating and hard-fought final, witnessed by viewers around the world on our Livestream channel, it just leaves us to thank everyone for taking part in this awesome competition and congratulate acerockolla on his deserved victory. We hope you enjoy the US GP on November 18!
